Starting point between Kolhorn and Schagen
Kolhorn can be reached by the N248, between Schagen and Middenmeer. There is a kayak-route of about 10 km. Between Schagen and Kolhorn you exit the N248 towards Barsingerhorn. Just across the bridge you turn right on the narrow road along the canal. Under the high-voltage lines is the starting point at the portage towards the canal.The kayak pier in the Nieuwe Sloot at pumping station De Snevert is removed. You need to climb across a gate and find a way through the mud on the ajacent field.
You navigate to the west and pass the harbour of Schagen. You go straight on and a little further you see a kayak pier on your left. This is the first portage. You follow the canal along the Westfriese Dijk until you come at the next portage where you cross a bike-road. To the left you continue for another short stretch.this is a portage across a road. You go straight on and at a bridge the passage is blocked so here you have another portage. Keep going straingt on through the neighbourhood Waldervaart. After another portage you leave Schagen. Follow the main canal and then turn sharp left. You go under a wooden footbridge and then you go trough a culvert under the N245. Then turn left and follow the canal around the neighbourhood Muggenburg. Then turn left under the railroad bridge. At the end of the canal there is a bend to the right and then you see a kayak pier on your left. After the portage you go to the left and then turn right through the industrial area. You go under the main road and then turn left. After the second bend to the left you turn right. At the end of the canal you have another portage at pumping station De Snuivert. The kayak pier is to the right of the pumping station. You paddle to the left and then turn right. At the next intersection you turn left. About halfway the canal there is a low bridge where you have another portage. At the end of the canal you have to carry the kayak across the dike. Turn left towards the starting point.
From Schagen to Barsingerhorn and Dirkshorn.
This route connects to the route around Waarland. There are 6 portages on this route, but they all have good kayak piers. To get there you pass Schagen. From Barsingerhorn you head west and carry the kayak across the road at pumping station De Snevert. Then you keep going west and you turn left at the T-junction. Then you turn right under the bridge. After a short distance you come at another T-junction. You turn left and carry the kayak across the road at the kayak pier. Keep going west and after a railroad bridge you come at the new houses. Here you can turn right towards the center of Schagen. But there really is nothing interesting to see, just the back-side of buildings. So you turn left here and then turn right again. On your right you see new houses. There are many plants growing in the water. It looks beautiful, but it slows you down. Just before the main road N245 you turn left. After a short distance you have to carry across a dike. There is an electric cattle fence, but it can be opened. Then after a short distance there are two more portages at Tolke. After the dike was a lake until the late middle ages. At Tolke the passing ships had to pay toll and that is where it gets its name from. At the junction you turn right, then left and some furhter right again under a culvert. Then you come at a pumping station whre you can carry the kayak across the dike to come at the canal around Waarland. Here you can turn right towards Dirkshorn.
